Surf Walkabout Sagres Portugal

https://www.algarve-tourist.com/Sagres-portugal-guide.html

So who knows what Sagres is famous for??

Two things, well maybe three. The Sagres Fortress, yes that’s right, and what else? Yes, right again it’s the surfing and the rugged coastline.

And finally, a great place to walk the Doggies along the cliff face. Oh and yes was just reminded of the SAGRES BEER. Our house sit is in Burgau (in the Algarve) so the road trip with the doggies in the back is only 30 minutes away.

A little About Sagres Fortress

Built around the 15th century by Henry the Navigator it was designed to protect the town from raiders from North Africa.

Henry was the chief driver of the Age of Discovery. He spend most of his time in Sagres planning his voyages out into North Africa.

He was the first European to discover the Azores and large parts of the African coastline.

Did you know that before this age of discovery, many Europeans were scared to venture out into the Atlantic.

Why? out of fear that sea monsters existed and would swallow up their ship 😂

And our friend Henry had the dubious claim to being the founder of the Atlantic slave trade. Well someone must have started it eh! But slaves existed way before him.

Poor old Henry died in 1460.

Remember the old sea dog Francis Drake, well he was very active returning from the Caribbean. He attacked the fortress in 1587 with 800 men.

After two hours of intense combat, fortifications adjacent to the fortress were destroyed and its artillery was pillaged.

It costs 3 euros to enter the fortress but not much to see. We didn’t bother as we had the dogs with us that day. Lucy and Milo were happier exploring outside.

The Surfers

Apart from the fort, Sagres is a destination for the traveling surfie. Situated on the south western tip of Portugal on the Atlantic Ocean.

Praia do Tonel seems to be the most popular beach for surfers and just next to the fortress.

A holiday to Sagres will appeal to surfers (kite, surf or bodyboarding) as well as visitors that just enjoy the outdoors.

Lots of surf shops and learn to surf schools. But currently not on our to do list.

The walks along the cliff paths were great for us walking the dogs.

For those thinking of traveling here there are plenty of hotels and B&B’s. Lots of motorhomes and plenty of parking available

And there are caravan/motorhome sites closeby.

Heading Towards the Fishing Harbour

We started walking the dogs towards the fishing harbour. Every village along the Algarve coastline has a fishing harbour. Well almost.

We took the cliff walk as the views over the ocean and cliffs are so refreshing, wind in the face stuff.

The fishing harbour is also the water sports centre. You can arrange fishing trips, sailing, jet ski etc..

Around Town

Sagres is not very large and a bit scattered, I mean it doesn’t seem to have a centre. Don’t think town planning was a priority when it was built in the 14 century. I would say that water sport are the main attraction with surfing at the top of the list.

Definity motorhomes are the preferred accommodation.

Pause 😇 and Refresh

I close my eyes in order to see.

I find peace in this moment, the present.

Love will immediately enter into any mind that truly wants it.

Perfect love casts out fear. If fear exists, then there is not perfect love.

When you meet anyone, remember it is a holy encounter. As you see him, you will see yourself … for in him you will find yourself or lose yourself.

Fear binds the world. Forgiveness sets it free

Miracles occur naturally as expressions of love. They are performed by those who temporarily have more for those who temporarily have less

A miracle is a correction.
