Camping Sikia, Kato Gatzea, Greece

After some three months in Turkey house sitting and a short visit to Bulgaria without the caravan, it was time to hook up with Australia (caravan) back in Thessaloniki and head south towards Athens.

As we are moving into the northern winter there are not a lot of good camping parks open but we found a cracker situated between two peaceful Greek villages, Kato Gatzea and Kala Nera on the Pagasetic Gulf, central Greece. We are thinking about spending the colder months here as it is very quiet and peaceful. Camping Sikia Web SiteCamping Sikia Location

Caravanning

Often asked “why a caravan when motorhomes are so popular” We did the motorhome thingy when we first decided to explore Europe. For convenience, we fitted a scooter to the tail (shopping and sightseeing). But we tended to stay longer in one place, so after that first year, we re-evaluated. and decided it was not for us.

Age comfort and being able to simply hop in the car and drive somewhere were factors under consideration and now we tow an 8-meter, two-tonne, twin-axle caravan. Overall we’re very happy with our choice, although there are some places we can’t go with the caravan. Greece Camping

We always have the choice to leave it for a day or two and overnight in a hotel or serviced apartment. Travel is always a personal choice. First-class or business class eh? Greece Camping.

Day Trip to En Plo, Milina

While at Camping Silia we decide to explore alttle so a Sunday drive up over the snow-covered mountains and back down onto the Pagasetic Gulf coastline was planned. Here we discovered the Εν Πλώ (En Plo) restaurant directly opposite the fishing harbour in Milina. After the Greek salad and freshly caught and cooked calamari, washed down with the local vino it was time for a walk. Yes, it snows in Greece, and with the heating blasting, we drove back to camp.

Camping Delphi

Delphi Camping. Highly recommended if you’re visiting the ancient city of Delphi. Owner Brothers have a great sense of humour as well as their own award-winning olive oil products. We stocked up. The campsite is clean and tidy and has a reasonably priced restaurant and pool with fabulous views. Unfortunately no moussaka for us. The restaurant (and pool) were closed while we were there in the off-season. Next Stop Camping Tsolis just outside Patras.

Camping Tsolis

Office setup at Camping Tsolis just outside Patras. Hoping to visit Corinth Canal, Nafpaktos and Patras before heading north. It was a rocky ride coming over the Rion-Antirion Bridge. A great central spot for visits also to the Greece capital of Athens. Spring is in the air and the weather was a little wet so pick the right pitch or you could be in the mud.

Patras

Patras was on our bucket list as the third largest city in Greece after Thesaloiniksi and Athens. Another reason is our car needed servicing and this city had a reputable service agent. So early start and off to the only Mercedes dealer close by. Patras is in western Greece and is a major ferry port. It’s more industrial than touristy. So we wandered around for the three hours it took to get the car serviced.

Nafpaktos

Nafpaktos – couldn’t remember the spelling for the GPS – thinking?? does it start with P ??? scroll scroll scroll… Luckily the sign found us. is a medieval town with a fairy tale vibe in central Greece, a couple of hours’ drive west of Athens. It is relatively untouched by international tourists but well known to the Greeks. The Centrepoint of the town is its harbor, sprinkled with fishing boats and encircled by restaurants and cafes. Feeling rather hungry we visited a traditional restaurant overlooking the harbor, the food was yummy. With full tummies, we decided to visit the Nafpaktos Castle, 600m uphill behind the town. Galaxidi

Galaxidi is on the coast at the bottom of the Delphi hills and about 15 minutes drive along a beautiful but winding coast road from Itea. Itea is where we were supposed to be buying groceries. Luckily they waited for our return from lunch at one of Galaxadi’s harbourfront restaurants. Our first Moussaka was worth the detour and this lovely old town is something you could add to your Ancient Delphi Tour. PS avoid the narrow village roads. Location

Camping Drepanos.

Summer is almost with us again as we head north toward Albania. Temperatures hitting the mid to late 20s and beer is back on the menu. Camping DREPANO is our home base overlooking the Port of Igoumenitsa. The Greek island of Corfu is our pitch view and only a short ferry ride away. Tickets booked. Camping Drepanos Web Site. Parga

Cruisy day. We drove 30 minutes down the Ionian coast from base camp passing some lovely villages and beaches to the most beautiful town of Parga. This town has a fairy tale island feeling. Colourful houses built on the slopes of the mountains with breathtaking views of the turquoise waters. What’s not to love? Spent a couple of hours meandering but the weather wasn’t great. Well, ya can’t have it all eh! Location
