Isla Plana is a small town just north east of Puerto de Mazarron in the Murcia district of Spain. Cartagena would be the capital of Murcia and well worth a visit to the port area, old town and the Teatro Romano de Cartagena, an old Roman Amphitheater. Check out or blog on Cartagena

There two way to enter Isla Plana, from the east on the E22, or the west on same. We came in from the east which is over the mountains and not recommended. If coming from the north on the best to come in on the RM332. Before Puerto de Mazarron take the E22 into Isla Plana. Camping Los Madriles is just on the far side of town and well signposted.

Camping Los Madriles

This site has what we all love during a northern winter? Two great thermal heated salt water swimming pools. We found the pitches adequate for us and we liked the gravel base, no mess. The pitches are private and have full facilities, water, power and grey water. Plenty to do here and if you like hiking then climb over the mountains to your heart’s content. If you just want a leisurely walk then across the road from the park is a waterfront trial into La Azohia

The beauty about coming here in the northern winter is the campers are mainly oldies, some grumpy and some nice, but they don’t bite. Everyone reacts to how they are treated, mostly.

Puerto de Mazarrón

The nearest major town would be Mazarron. The port is worth a visit for lunch or dinner. I did take some lovely photos of the port area but can’t find them for the life of me. We also did our shopping there as all the big supermarkets are represented.

La Azohia

When energetic, and usually after a morning swim we follow the waterfront trail into town. La Azohia is an interesting village and the first thing we noticed was all the motorhomes wild camping and scattered along the side of the hill entering the town. I was quite surprised that the locals may not like it but then it’s such a small community that the influx of tourists would be good for the town, business-wise.

The most notable building is glaringly obvious as you walking into town. Torre de Santa Elena is a watchtower dating back to the 16th century and the walk up is a great way to view the surrounds. You can walk climb to the top of the tower but i found it a little scary. Yes it must be a must to experience.
