Did you know there’s a Restored Roman Theatre in Cartagena, Spain πŸ€”

Our caravan was parked at Camping Los Madriles, in the township of Isla Plana, only 30 minutes from Cartagena.

So surely a must for a visit to the Teatro Romano de Cartagena (Restored ancient Roman Theatre).

This camp-site we fully recommend. It has everything you need to have a great time. The naturally heated swimming pools are enough to bring us back.

Check out their website here https://www.campinglosmadriles.es/es/

So up we get and go for our morning swim in the heated pool a quick brekky and hit the road πŸš™ πŸš™ beep beep. Yes i know we are blessed πŸ™πŸΌ

So Why Caravaning? Aren’t motorhomes Trending Now πŸ€”

We thought so too, and bought a Motorhome in the UK January 2018 and headed off on our big adventure. Caught a ferry from Portsmouth to Santander in Spain and spent the next three months roaming around the north east of Spain and then headed up into France. πŸ‡«πŸ‡·

Horses for courses they say. We loved our Motorhome and we fitted a platform on the back and loaded it with a Honda 125cc Scooter. The scooter was for scooting to the shops for food and wine and for taking us to the odd tourist spot for a look around.

While travelling back up through France and overnighting in a van park we noticed a new arrival towing a caravan. He unhitched the caravan just opposite us and then pulled out this controller and manoeuvred the caravan remotely into position. The caravan was fitted with Motor Movers on each wheel and he backed and forwarded it into a very tight place. Amazing to watch.

Well, to cut a long story short when we traveled back to the UK we swapped the motorhome and scooter for a Twin Axle 8m caravan and Car.

Motorhome Holidays Yippee 🚐

Hiring a motorhome just like the one in this video is a great idea for travelling around England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland or even Europe, just like us eh!. We are very aware of the social distancing issues and follow all the rules and advise given.

Lets Have a wee Walk Around the Harbour

Cartagena has a great harbour and Marina and while we were walking along the waterfront and just across the harbour we saw this amazing yacht (pictured below).

I was so taken back by the shape and size i did a bit of local and yes i asked google, and what did i get?

The vessel is called Sailing Yacht A, and launched in 2015. It’s a sail-assisted motor yacht built in Germany for the Russian oligarch billionaire Andrey Melnichenko. It underwent final sea trials and the final fit-out at the Navantia shipyard in Cartagena.

The cost to build? A measly $460 million Dollars US (approximately). Drop in the ocean!

Walkabout Round the Main SQ

After we left the marina we headed across the road towards the main cafe restaurant area for lunch and found this interesting street art show. Well mainly all black and white photography. Beautiful landscapes and animals.

After lunch we headed into the highlight of the day, the restored ancient Roman Theatre and museum.

Museum – Teatro Romano de Cartagena (Restored ancient Roman Theatre)

What amazed us was that a whole city was built on top of it and there are lots of houses and apartments on its boundaries… it is literally in the middle of everything.

It was also quite strange to see people’s freshly laundered t-shirts and jeans hanging from verandahs on the street adjacent as we wandered around something so ancient. How was it discovered recently in 1988? Some houses that were built on top of it were knocked down for redevelopment and some of the ruins were found.

The archaeologist of the University of Murcia, SebastiΓ‘n Ramallo Asensio, directed the excavations to exhume it. What a project to get your hands on eh?.

It is said it was built between 1 and 5 BC and accommodated 700 spectors.

Amazingly and like many of the cultural monuments in Europe, it is not expensive to visit and there was ALMOST no-one there. We felt quite privileged. On the way into the Theatre, there are displays of the preserved relics.

This Theatre was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest on January 21, 1999.

β€œThere are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.”
