Salema, Algarve

Salema is only a short drive from our base in the beautiful Portuguese village of Burgau. You can actually walk to Salema along the cliffs. Only 12 mins by car but a couple of hours walking (13 km). You would really have to be fit and adventurous as the cliff walk can be a little strenuous and scary for the faint-hearted. I made it halfway and then turned back.

We have spent the last six months traveling along the coast of the Algarve in southern Portugal. For anyone considering a place in the sun for retirement, we would certainly recommend the Algarve.

Salema Beach

Salema was just a quiet fishing village but today lots of holiday homes and apartments have invaded the outer edges of the village. probably because it’s so quiet with a beautiful beach. Plenty of cafes and restaurants.

Amazing Streets

The streets are so narrow and definitely not designed for traffic. All the buildings in the village are so well maintained and beautifully painted in bright colours.

Around Salema

The town has plenty for you to do or not to do, hiking along the cliffs, fishing, water sport, sailing, and of course just the beach. There are lots of northerners that have retired here and also lots of rentals if you want to come for the holidays. Rental costs for a quality two-bed apartment or House (off-season) are approximately 800 euros a month. You can check out the local real estate prices here.

And from the Cliffs

Like most coastal villages in the Algarve, they are built for easy access to the sea. Most of the coastline has jagged cliffs, great for hiking, and amazing views. So most villages are built on quite steep descents towards the ocean. Up on the cliff line is where the new apartments and houses have been built and have great views over the village and beach area.

Where to Eat?

The Atlantico restaurant is situated right on the beach and is known locally as the best place to eat. There are many other bars and eating places in the village so no problem with variety. My favorite meal? You will find bacalhau in just about every Portuguese restaurant. Better known as salted cod. Portuguese fare heavily relies on seafood. From crispy whole sardines to dried and salted cod, these are the dishes to try in the Algarve and beyond. the picture below is cod fish stew, so warm and tasty.

Perhaps Portugal’s most adored pastry, the pastéis de nata is a pint-size egg custard tart. Puff pastry is jammed with a yellow custard whisked with egg yolks, sugar, cream, and a dash of lemon zest and baked until golden.

Caravaning or Motorhome Travelers

While traveling in the Algarve there are two great parks at Lagos and Faro. These sites are run by a french company called Yelloh Village, the link is above. We stayed at the one in Luz just outside Lagos. As members of ACSI, we were able to get a discount due to the off-season at 20 euros a night. Click on the link below to enquire. The facilities are great with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, restaurants and bars, and a health centre. They have everything including Entertainment, during the high summer season only.
