The Trip, Milan to Venice
Well time to move on again after a week in Milan. Our base campsite was Camping Village Milano so time to plan our Milan exit and route to Venice. As always it’s so important to check the best way out of the campsite and the easiest route to the next destination. I do this with the help of google maps. Google doesn’t consider towing an eight-meter caravan so we always add on an hour for stops. Today was a short day, a four-hour drive. We had only one stop for coffee and toilet break arriving mid-afternoon at our destination. Our average towing speed is 70-80kph.

Now, this campsite is definitely a must-stay if you are visiting Venice with your caravan, motorhome, or just camping. You can also rent mobile homes as well. Great for a low-budget holiday close to the island of Venice. The bus stop for Venice is just outside the back gate of the campsite, opposite the Hilton Hotel and just a short ten-minute bus ride into town. All so convenient. We use Euro-camping (ACSI) membership for campsite recommendations and off-season discounts. Click on the picture to learn more.
The pitches at Camping Venezia Village are well laid out and roomy enough for our eight-metre caravan and car. Our stay was short, only four days so no awning went up, just a lot of trouble for a couple of days. We plan to get a smaller easy to erect one soon. The pitches are a grave grass mix but neat and tidy. Power is six amps but no water or grey water on our site. The wifi is extra at two euros a day, we used our own.
Facilities at the campsite were well above average with wellness center, indoor swimming pool and restaurant all pretty much recently built. The shower and toilet areas are outstanding, roomy and very clean. The only problem was it was mid-August and very busy as you would expect for Venice. The site is open all year so you would expect it to be not so busy in the off-peck season. Although the park was full for most of our stay it wasn’t noisy. Campers mostly respect that we all got to sleep.
Costs in the high season for a pitch with caravan, car, two adults and power was 25 euros for low season and 35 euros for the high season. To use the pool was 2.50 euros. Prices as of August 2021.
When we had the motorhome one of the inconveniences was shopping. We are meanderers so we normally stay in a base camp a lot longer than most travellers. It’s not unusual for us to be settled in for a couple of months. With the motorhome, we did have a Honda 125cc scooter. Was great in the warm weather but not so great in the wind rain and cold. So we transferred to a car and caravan and boy a lot more comfortable. Yes, both have their pros and cons but with our style of travelling the C&C suited better. Now back to the shopping thing.
It is great when you find a great little supermarket close by and walking is always our preference. Car yes, on those days we need to get some heavy stuff. Close by to Camping Venice is one of our favorites, LIDL. Only a ten-minute walk and some great bargains. Prosecco Superior at four euros a bottle so we bought a dozen 😂
Next Leg
Left Camping Village Milano at 8 am and headed for the Venice Igoumenitsa (Greece) ferry terminal. It’s Important not to depend on your GPS as they can be inaccurate at times. We use a Garmin with caravan and motorhome input so that it chooses suitable routes. But even with the latest updates, they can get it wrong. Best if you can google the route first and then see if your GPS has matched it. The ferry terminal was only a 35-minute drive away so we drove down in the car initially. The car GPS didn’t recognise the roadworks in progress so I missed the turn-off and we were taken around in a loop before it corrected its self.
The day we left with the caravan we were confident of the route so no issues. We headed straight to the terminal to pick up our tickets, a little queue, then the entry gate flashed our passports and down to the ferry hold point. The ferry company recommended arrival two hours prior to departure, we arrived three hours plus. We loaded on time but while waiting on the rear deck we notice passengers still arriving to load, while the ferry was due to depart.. Leaving it very fine. We used ANEK Line but there is plenty of booking agencies. Cost us approximately 600 euros for the car caravan and two adults with an outside cabin. Prices are current August 2021.
