The Road Trip to Trusted Sitters Aqua Amarga
A Short trip today down the east coast of Spain on the AP7 from Isla Plana to Agua Amarga, only 1 hr 30 minutes. Agua Amarga is another of our Trusted House Sitters assignments. This one was to look after two little terriers while their owner spent Christmas with her family in the UK.
This is our second year with Trusted House Sitters. Whenever we want a little diversion from Caravan Traveling we look for a House Sit/Pet Sit assignment on the trusted house sitters site., or someone finds us There are hundreds of opportunities to explore. This time we looked for one close by with room for our caravan. Never usually a problem.
Aqua Amarga house sit was listed for a three-week stay over the Christmas holidays in 2018. This housesit was only 90 minutes away from where we were camping. Submitted our application online and arranged a SKYPE call with the owner a couple of days later. Our host was going to the UK for Christmas to visit her family and she invited us to look after her two little terriers, Bimba and Lola.
Where is this Agua Amarga
This house sit was in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park in the southeastern corner of Spain. This is a wild and isolated landscape and is the only region in mainland Europe with a true hot desert climate. The climate was absolutely perfect with warm days and cool nights. As you can see from our photos beautiful blues skies just about every day.
These peach orchids next door to our house sit were perfect for long doggy walks. Both Bimba and Lola got very excited at walkies time. They loved the freedom to run and explore. Lola was more adventurous and got great pleasure hunting rabbits. Could never catch them of course but loved the hunt. Bimba just followed and pretended to be excited 😂. They would both come back panting and excitingly telling us “wasn’t I just so great chasing that rabbit eh! I almost caught it !”
Bimba and Lola were the inspiration for Fabian’s new book, the Man with a Butterfly Mind (currently looking for an Agent and publishing).
Trusted Sitters @ Agua Amarga
Agua Amarga is a pretty fishing village and beach resort on the Almeria coast, with a population of just 400. Still undiscovered by large-scale tourism, this is one of Andalucia’s hidden seaside treasures. While its name may translate as Bitter Water, this delightful, laid-back beach town has excellent Mediterranean cuisine, good independent boutiques, and trendy bars. During the high season, May to September / October, the beach scene is lively and bars are buzzing. So a bit quiet while we were there which didn’t bother us at all.
A short drive away is the town of Carboneras where we would search out modern supermarkets. We found that the cost of food in Spain was very reasonable and didn’t seem as expensive as in other countries we visited. The wine was really inexpensive. Bottles of white wine were approximately 2 or 3 euros each, which of course meant we were indulgent. A glass of white wine while watching the sunset was a highlight of each day after a long walk with our furry friends.
Here we see the area surrounding the house and lovey Lola. We spent four weeks in Agua Amarga and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Great fans of Trusted House Sitters and thank you to our host.
